  WHAT HAPPENED?

  After replacing Erik ten Hag at the helm at Old Trafford in November, the Portuguese coach was unable to lift the Red Devils, who are 16th in the Premier League heading into the last game of the season. They will also be without European football next season following their Europa League final loss to Tottenham – a huge financial blow heading into the next transfer window.

  Amorim has faced heavy criticism due to his team's ongoing struggles, with the Portuguese coach even admitting he would accept being sacked by the club after such a disastrous campaign. Ex-Liverpool and England centre-back Carragher says a lot rests on Amorim's ability to make United a competitive team again as he suggested the two parties should split soon.

  "After losing a potential £100 million windfall by missing out on the Champions League, United will be gambling the short-term and long-term health of the club on Amorim leading an extraordinary revival," he wrote in . "No wonder [part-owner Sir Jim] Ratcliffe looked haunted at the trophy presentation in Bilbao. This is the path United embarked upon when they headhunted Amorim.

  "Now that his six months in charge have gone so badly, Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues will need a decisive plan for how he will navigate the club through the most challenging period in United’s modern history. Their grave concern must be that they have seen absolutely no evidence so far to suggest he is up to it. On that basis, backing Amorim this summer may be the honourable option, but it is not necessarily the bravest.
